Originally a small linen shop on Main Street carrying household niceties from tablecloths to hankies, Cedar Chest has been a familiar name for thoughtful gifting in the heart of downtown Northampton for decades.

In the late 1970s, Cedar Chest's owners, along with a small but determined group of forward-thinking retailers and restaurateurs, ushered in a new kind of shopping experience by breathing new life into the cavernous 1800s dry goods store on Main Street once called McCallum's.

Cedar Chest History - McCallum's Department Store

Envisioning a collection of retail shops, funky boutiques, imported goods, fine art, eateries, performance studios, and community space, Thornes Marketplace was designed with an eye toward modern retail architecture and a deep respect for the historical past.

By bringing Cedar Chest in as one of its anchor stores—expanding its offerings to include everything from soaps to stationery—and recruiting talent from food to fashion, Thornes Marketplace quickly became the place to meet, eat, and to shop.
